Doctor comes from the Latin word “docere,” which means “to teach.” There is no greater need for understanding than of the serious health threats that rapid climate change pose to our way of life. Due to the “just right” environmental conditions in South Carolina, there is some of the best biodiversity in the world creating many “Beautiful Places.” That this balance is at risk clearly is observed in the recent towering spike in the graph of carbon dioxide levels in the Earth’s atmosphere over the past 800,000 years, which is caused by the burning of fossil fuels since the Industrial Revolution. It is at the highest level by far in the entirety of human history and it is rising exponentially. Being conservative increasingly will require conservation to preserve our sporting traditions and safeguard our people. Poor air and water quality along with rising sea levels and more frequent severe weather events adversely affect everyone. For people already struggling with the social determinants of health, the injustice is stark.
